Alycia & Ewen

Sit back for a wild ride with this one my friends… Alycia and Ewen’s wedding was literally the most epic wedding to date. These legends knew exactly what they wanted when it came to celebrating their wedding. From the moment I first met these guys, I knew it was going to be special - and it did not disappoint! The fun, the good vibes and focus on love, friendship and family made this such a special one to be part of. An all out A-class list of vendors made this day happen… strap in and enjoy!

How did you find the wedding planning process?
I’m such a visual person, I do a mood board for every decision I make! So that’s where I started. I started saving down things that we liked and eventually when I pulled it together there was a clear theme - fun, bright, warm colours! It was pretty clear straight away when we did that exercise the wedding we were going to have. Ewen and I are pretty colourful in our everyday life so it really was a true representation of us.

What were some of your favourite wedding details and why you chose them?
Honestly, we did so much ourselves (and with lots of help from our incredible friends and family) which I know some people would argue against and it definitely added an extra level of pressure, but it also meant that it wasn’t just one day. The lead up and making things together was all part of the fun! A few of my favourite things

1. The dress I had my eye on for a really long time was a) not available in Australia and b) way out of my budget. So when my mum, Sharon and her best friend Margaret offered to make it I was ecstatic! When they first left school they started their own label called ‘Sharmag’ so we were able to bring it back with this dress and they even had an original label from Sharmag that they attached in the dress. Some of my most special moments was making that dress in Margaret’s studio. Mum also made the flower girl dresses and my veil with hand died colourful flowers from the leftover fabric so everything is one of a kind!

2. The decor was such an important part to bringing the vision to life and we decided to do most of it ourselves (other than the incredible flowers by @petalpusherssydney). We died the tablecloths, designed the printing, bought colourful vases and my favourite part built and tiled our own bars. I had an image of what I wanted and couldn’t find anything to meet that so we just decided to do it ourselves! And it was a complete team effort. Our friend found us the wood, our best man built them and then mum and I hand- painted all the tiles with a stencil from Etsy. One of those bars is now a permanent fixture in our backyard so again it’s a forever memory not just one day.

3. The colours and theme was so us and so we really committed and had amazing support to make that happen. A big part of that were the flowers and decoration by Em from @petalpusherssydney - which were out of this world! She was just excited as me about the vision and she bloody nailed it! She brought so many little touches too - I was blown away by that.

I was also so happy with the bridesmaid dresses and how they came together everyone looked stunning, but we’re comfortable as they got to pick a style and colour that suited them and even though they were all completely different dresses I think it worked so well. Ewen had his pink suit custom made by and that looked incredible too. Everyone got behind the theme, even our guests dressed in it on the day which just made it all that more special and us.

What was your biggest surprise on your wedding day?
I think as I said Ewen’s Italian speech at the end was a completely surprise and I loved it. All the speeches were phenomenal though and loved them.

I would say we surprised everyone with our secret coordinated dance to Promiscuous girl haha.

What were your thoughts when you watched your wedding film(s) for the first time?
Both the short snippet and the full video are incredible. Honestly when I watched it my cheeks were hurting I was smiling so hard. Our friends and family had the same reaction too. Lots of laughs and some tears which is exactly what we wanted! You blew us away!! We couldn’t have asked for a better video, we are so so happy with it and I will be cherishing that forever.

Let’s chat about your vendors, how did they all do?
Stand outs would definitely be @petalpusherssydney as mentioned, she went above and beyond and got as excited as us!

@jaybirdweddings coordinated the day and she was everything I needed and more. Again went absolutely above and beyond and knew what was needed before I did and new how to handle every situation. An absolute lifesaver.

@ciaopepis was the caterer and everyone raved about the food (as expected I didn’t get too much of it though!)

@weddingsbysam did an awesome job at capturing our vision and making us look good, I have too many favourite pics to choose from!

We got most of our furniture from The Wedding and Event Creators - they were epic! So helpful and flexible and their stuff was perfect for what we wanted. We did cocktail style and they had amazing rattan pieces and lounges to suit.

@leroyandi made our stunning rings (both engagement and wedding) and mine fit together beautifully (I still cannot stop staring at them)

Our beautiful friend Clare made the cake @thespaturlette and omg it was not only the most delicious cake I’ve ever had but looked so beautiful too.

And of course Above Below Visuals! Tim, from the get go you were so enthusiastic about our day and made us feel special and supported (which is hard when you had so many weddings before us). On the day you were such a legend, guiding us when we needed and then disappearing so we didn’t feel self-conscious. And the output!! As my dad said, that isn’t a wedding video, that’s a blockbuster film. You really got us and got our vision and we are so grateful!!

What would you say to couples who are on the fence about booking a videographer for their wedding?
100000% worth it. Photos don’t capture the movement, the special in between moments and sound, voices, laughter are such an important part of a day. I can look back on that forever and instantly be transported to the day.

KIND WORDS

‘Tim was amazing to work with. From the first touch base, he was super helpful, enthusiastic and keen to create something special for us. After going through the process of getting married, it was so nice to work with someone who was enthusiastic about our wedding as us, and knowing that he had a 100 more weddings before ours, it couldn't have been easy. On the day, Tim amazing at being there when you needed him but disappearing (and still capturing) so that you didn't feel like you had a camera in your face all day. And the output was nothing like we could of imagined. So far we've only seen the teaser video but in my Dad's words 'It felt like a movie blockbuster'. Blown away by his skill, attention and general demeanour. Will be highly recommending Above Below Visuals to everyone to all my friends when they get married.’
